Every actions inside the body, whether voluntary or involuntary, are governed by Vayu. Some actions such as digestion, blood circulation, pumping and beating of the heart, etc. are performed uninterruptedly and are not under voluntary control. They come completely within the scope of the autonomous nervous system and work independently to govern all involuntary actions of the body. In spite of recent advancements in neurosciences, integration of voluntary and involuntary motor commands still needs to be better understood ; on the contrary, Ayurvedic classical texts present extensive evidences on similar integration. Actions involved during natural physiological calls or natural urges (NU), are involuntary; however, few are partially under voluntary control i.e. heavy breathing during exercise, yawning, coughing, sneezing, belching, vomiting, hunger, sleep, flow of tears, expulsions of flatus, urine, faeces and secretions discharged during orgasm are some of the involuntary actions that are partially under voluntary control.
Performing one’s actions, especially natural physiological calls or holding them back voluntarily, has always been a key feature in human beings . Since majority of individuals are striving hard on upgrading their status of living than improving quality of life, the above-mentioned key feature is conveniently manipulated to meet their demands of mundane life. Ayurveda refers to such actions as Vega Udeeran (forceful initiations) or Vega Dhaaran (suppression), and if with-held repeatedly may lead to severe conditions which are root cause of all diseases, collectively termed as Udaavarta Rogas It is extremely challenging to detect morbidities caused due to manipulations of such involuntary actions, as some of them are intermittent in nature like belching, sneezing, coughing, etc. and some are performed uninterruptedly like breathing. Since these actions are predominantly governed by Vata, they possess unique attributes of Vega (locomotion) [5]. They move in a specific direction and their intensities can be quantified using latest technology. Whether naturally expressed (physiologic) or manifested as Roga Lakshana (pathologic), this unique attribute of Vata is relatively expressed in different speed and frequencies which needs to be determined. Hence, such urges when intermittently or inadvertently manipulated, redirect the normal flow, leaving scope for severe morbidities in the heart leading to cardiovascular disorder (CVD).
Udaavarta Rogas (उदावर्त रोग): Causes and Diet to Improve
In Ayurveda, Udaavarta (उदावर्त) is a condition traditionally associated with the abnormal upward or reverse movement of Vata dosha. It is often described in relation to suppressing natural bodily urges, disturbed bowel movements, abdominal discomfort, gas, and difficulty passing stool or urine.
The appropriate diet and treatment depend on the symptoms. Udaavarta is an Ayurvedic concept, not a single diagnosis in modern medicine.
1. Causes of Udaavarta according to Ayurveda
Common contributing factors
- Repeatedly suppressing the urge to pass stool, urine, or intestinal gas.
- Irregular eating times or skipping meals.
- Eating too much dry, cold, or difficult-to-digest food.
- Insufficient water and dietary fibre.
- Sedentary habits and lack of physical activity.
- Stress, anxiety, and inadequate sleep.
From a modern medical perspective, similar symptoms may occur with constipation, dehydration, irritable bowel syndrome, medication side effects, urinary problems, or other digestive conditions.
2. Diet to improve symptoms
The general dietary goal is to support regular bowel movements, maintain hydration, and reduce discomfort from gas.
Foods to prefer
- Warm, freshly cooked moong dal khichdi.
- Cooked vegetables such as lauki, pumpkin, carrots and spinach.
- Oats, whole-wheat roti and other whole grains.
- Ripe papaya, pear, orange and soaked prunes.
- Moong dal, lentils and other fibre-rich foods, increased gradually.
Fluids and digestion
- Drink water regularly throughout the day.
- Try warm water in the morning if comfortable.
- Include vegetable soup and other fluids.
- Add fibre gradually to avoid worsening gas and bloating.
If you have kidney or heart disease and have been advised to restrict fluids, follow your clinician’s advice.
3. Foods and habits to limit
- Excessively fried, greasy and highly processed foods.
- Large meals that cause abdominal heaviness.
- Excessive tea or coffee if they worsen your symptoms.
- Very low-fibre diets dominated by refined flour, biscuits and packaged snacks.
- Suppressing the urge to pass stool or gas.
Spicy food does not need to be avoided by everyone; reduce it if it triggers your symptoms.
4. A simple daily Indian diet plan
| Time | Suggested food |
|---|---|
| Early morning | A glass of warm water |
| Breakfast | Oats porridge or vegetable dalia with fruit |
| Mid-morning | Papaya or pear |
| Lunch | Whole-wheat roti, moong dal, cooked vegetables and curd if tolerated |
| Evening | Fruit or a small handful of nuts |
| Dinner | Vegetable khichdi or roti with cooked vegetables and dal |
| Before bed | Water as needed; avoid forcing extra fluids |
Adjust portions and food choices to your age, appetite, diabetes status and other medical conditions.
5. Ayurvedic approach
In traditional Ayurvedic practice, management may involve regular meals, suitable warm foods, attention to natural urges, and clinician-guided Vata management. Abhyanga (oil massage) or other therapies may be considered by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner depending on the condition.
Do not self-prescribe castor oil, strong purgatives, herbal laxatives or enemas, especially if you have severe pain, dehydration, pregnancy, or other medical conditions. The correct treatment depends on the underlying cause.
6. When to seek medical help
Seek urgent medical care for severe or worsening abdominal pain, vomiting, a markedly swollen abdomen, or inability to pass stool or gas. Blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, or persistent constipation also warrants medical evaluation

क. (Dietary Intervention)
(Detoxification & Therapies)
(Lifestyle & Mental Health)
(Important Recommendation)
